Churches, schools and other organizations interested in protecting their people and facilities in the event of bomb threats will have an opportunity for free training May 7–9, 2019, in Montgomery.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is holding three training sessions focused on bombing prevention. All sessions will be held in the First floor ALEA Training Room of the RSA (Retirement System of Alabama) Headquarters Building, 201 South Union Street, Montgomery, Alabama.
The courses are designed for owners and operators of public and private sector organizations interested in or required to have a basic awareness of bombing prevention measures. Public safety personnel, emergency management officials, law enforcement and special event coordinators will benefit from the courses.
The three bomb threat training courses are as follows:
Bombing Prevention Awareness, May 7, 2019, 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
The Bombing Prevention Awareness Course (BPAC) provides participants with knowledge of general bombing prevention measures from improvised explosive device (IED) construction and classification through protective measures for potential bombing incidents. It enhances the participant’s understanding of the IED threat and potential response picture that aids the participant in mitigating the impact of a bombing incident while considering time constraints of CI owner/operators and response personnel.
Bomb Threat Management Planning, May 8, 2019, 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
While bomb threats are rare, every organization should have a bomb threat management plan in place before they encounter a bomb threat situation. The Bomb Threat Management (BTM) Planning Course, offered by the Office for Bombing Prevention (OBP) within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), National Protection and Programs Directorate’s Office of Infrastructure Protection, introduces participants to the DHS risk management process and the development of a BTM plan. During the course, participants will learn how to apply specific portions of the risk management process and BTM procedures against mock BTM plans. The course culminates in a tabletop exercise with participants applying the course material by evaluating and revising a BTM plan.
Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Devise Detection Course, May 9, 2019, 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
The Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) Detection course provides participants with knowledge and skills in recognizing the VBIED threat, identification of components and devices, methods for reacting to improvised explosive devices, and the procedures for inspecting vehicles to detect VBIEDs. The VBIED Detection course is designed for first responders, public safety officers, security officers, and law enforcement officers tasked with inspecting vehicles for explosive threats, hazards, or prohibited items.
Continuing education credits (CEUs) may be available for these courses. The courses are free, but transportation, lodging and lunch are not provided.
Early registration is recommended, as each training must have a minimum number of participants.
