BWA assists displaced people in Sri Lanka

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — The Baptist World Alliance (BWA) is providing assistance for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Sri Lanka.

Conflict between government forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam forces has left tens of thousands of citizens displaced within the South Asian island nation. The United Nations estimates at least 50,000 civilians are trapped in the conflict zone in northeastern Sri Lanka, where they lack adequate food, water and medical facilities. The Sri Lankan government calculates the number of civilians trapped because of the fighting at between 15,000 and 20,000.

Approximately 150,000 IDPs in the country are living in government camps with limited water supplies. An initial grant of $5,000 was sent by Baptist World Aid, the relief and development arm of BWA, to the Sri Lankan Baptist Sangamaya (SLBS) to support the union’s efforts to assist IDPs.

The SLBS has joined with other churches and Christian organizations to provide milk, biscuits, medicine and drinking water to people in need.
