Campbell President Wiggins retires after 35 years

BUIES CREEK, N.C. — Longtime Campbell University President A. Norman Wiggins retired May 29, the same day that Jerry M. Wallace was named as his successor by the board of trustees.

Wiggins, 79, had served as president of the Baptist college since 1967 and was only the third president in the history of the 116-year-old school.Wiggins will assume the role of chancellor following his sabbatical.

For the past two years Wallace had served as special assistant to the president and as a professor of religion and society in Campbell University’s divinity school. Wallace, 68, has served on the Campbell faculty since 1970. He received his master of theology degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C. He received a master’s degree in sociology and a doctor of education degree from North Carolina State University.
