NEW YORK — Data collected by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops suggest the Catholic Church in the United States is undergoing a surprising surge in adult conversions. Throughout the United States the number of adults being baptized as Catholics is up by some 10 percent this year, and the number of Catholic adults returning to the church after being baptized as infants is rising even faster.
