With the theme “It’s All About You, Lord,” Catoma Baptist Church, Montgomery, celebrated 50 years of ministry Sept. 8.
“We were very fortunate that Tommy Lee, who was the first pastor of the church, was … able to come back and be the speaker on this day,” said Delores Freeman Cork, anniversary committee chairperson. Cork noted that Lee spoke on the topic of how to grow a church, and it was particularly special for the charter members in attendance to have the opportunity to see him.
The service featured a combined choir of both Catoma Baptist and Trinity Memorial Baptist Church, Montgomery, Catoma’s mother church. Catoma’s minister of music, Ron Mallory, led the music.
Pastor Chad Underwood provided several special recognitions, and the Montgomery Baptist Association church received three plaques: one from Lonette Berg, executive director of the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission; one from Gov. Robert Bentley, presented by Ken May, director of missions for Montgomery Association; and one from Montgomery Association, also presented by May. Cork said more than 325 people were present for the celebration and a lunch followed the service. “It was a wonderful day” of people coming from different states, she said, adding historic photos of the church were shown and a copy of a 28-page booklet of the church’s history was passed out to each family.
Looking to the future of Catoma, Underwood noted the importance of keeping the gospel at the forefront. “We want to build a people” who love people and love God’s Word, he said.
