CHIBI CITY, China — A Hong Kong Christian was arrested in China apparently for his work in printing Sunday School materials for children.
Human rights group ChinaAid reports that police detained Chen Yueli on Dec. 19 as he passed through customs in China. He is accused of “illegal business operations” and is being held in Hubei province at Chibi Detention Center in Chibi City. Yueli’s visits with his lawyer and his contact with the outside world have been restricted.
Eight or more other Christians also were arrested. No other information is known about their arrests and situations.
Yueli has lived in mainland China for more than two decades. He has traveled between Hong Kong and mainland China, assisting Christian organizations, states ChinaAid.
When he was detained Dec. 19, he was traveling with his two minor children. With Yueli’s arrest, the children were left alone until their mother could travel to them.
China is No. 19 on Open Doors’ 2024 World Watch List of places most difficult to be a Christian.
