A woman was raped and her mother severely assaulted by relatives who were upset that the women had become Christians.
While working July 15 on land inherited from her father, the 20-year-old woman and her mother were accosted in India’s Chhattisgarh state by male Hindu relatives, states Morning Star News.

The relatives grabbed and dragged the woman by her hair to a house, where she was raped.
Her mother was attacked with a shovel and ax and left nearly dead in the field.
After escaping from her assailants, the 20-year-old — along with her 18-year-old sister — ran into the jungle and then to a police station.
‘Because we have become Christians’
The woman told Morning Star that her attacker admitted to police the assault on the woman’s mother but denied raping the 20-year-old.
“He quickly admitted that because we have become Christians, they do not want us to have a share of my father’s property,” the woman explained to Morning Star. She said her family put faith in Jesus Christ six years ago after her father’s death.
Police arrested all four perpetrators.
The mother had several surgeries and remained bedridden from her injuries more than two months later.
