RIOBAMBA, Ecuador — The community of Riobamba, Ecuador, is still recovering from a series of accidental explosions set off at a nearby Ecuadorian military base.
Assemblies of God (AG) News Service reports that two Assemblies of God churches and a Bible school in Riobamba suffered damage during the 20-minute series of explosions. Authorities reported that an accidental grenade detonation at an ammunition depot set off several other explosives, killing eight and injuring 140 others.
Staff at the churches and school were spared, but four people suffered injuries, including facial lacerations from flying glass. AG News reported that windows in all three buildings had been blown out and one church suffered extensive roof and subsequent water damage. Sound equipment and chairs were also damaged.
“The first blast literally raised the roof at Oasis of Hope [Assembly of God] and set it back down again,” Ray Talley, U.S. A/G area director, told AG News. “It looks like a bomb went off.”
