Conference to address ‘intimate’ issues

By Sarah E. Pavlik

What does God’s Word say about sex? The women’s ministry directors at two Madison Baptist Association churches have decided to offer a conference just for women on this topic.

“Maybe you have issues with sex, maybe you don’t. But everyone should know what God has to say on the matter,” said Audrey Henley, the women’s ministry director at Whitesburg Baptist Church, Huntsville. “I’m convinced that if women accept the message, their lives and their marriages will be changed to the glory of God.”

Henley — together with LeAnn Newsom, director of women’s ministry at Willowbrook Baptist Church, Huntsville — decided to bring Intimate Issues, a conference that addresses the 21 most-asked questions Christian women have about sex to the Tennessee Valley. The seminar, scheduled for Sept. 9–10, will be held in Whitesburg Baptist’s sanctuary and is open to women 17 years and older.

“It’s something Christian women in north Alabama have needed for some time,” Newsom said. “Many people in the church have sexual issues they have never dealt with and those issues are destroying the marriage relationship.

“For generations, sex has been a taboo subject within the church, so what has happened is that people have turned to the world for information,” Newsom continued. “Today there is little difference between how people in church view sex and how the world views it. Our approach to sex has become perverse, and now, we have no choice but to address the issue.”

Henley who attended an earlier Intimate Issues conference in Illinois, said, “Linda (Dillow) and Lorraine (Pintus) give women God’s perspective on sex.”

Dillow and Pintus lead the conference, which has been held nationwide since the two authored the book “Intimate Issues” in 1999.

Dillow and her husband worked with Christian leaders in other countries for 17 years. When they returned to the United States, she had a passion to preserve and restore the family so she began writing books.

Pintus and her husband lead Hearts and Home Ministries, an endeavor to build Christ-centered marriage and family relationships. She has been published in various magazines and is the author of “Diapers, Pacifiers and Other Holy Things.”

During the two-day conference, the speakers will address issues such as rekindling the marriage fire, adultery, pornography, past sexual sin and the many issues that fall in between.

Several workshops are also included in the conference, including sessions for single, divorced and married women.

Nancy Barton, the director of women’s ministry from Wheaton Bible Church and newest member of the Intimate Issues team, will head up the singles’ workshops.
