Mount Enon Baptist Church, Dothan, celebrated its 125th anniversary July 14 with an “old-fashioned” homecoming Sunday and a several-day revival that followed.
According to James Nance, minister of music and senior adults, the Columbia Baptist Association church began the day at 9:30 a.m. with fellowship and registration before the 10 a.m. service.
Jerry Starling, who was ordained in ministry in Mount Enon Baptist, spoke during both the anniversary service and the church’s following revival that began Sunday evening and went through July 17. Steve Skidmore, a former Mount Enon minister of music, lead the music for both the anniversary service and revival.
Virginia Stephenson, representative for the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission, presented the church with a plaque. The church history also was read. And a fellowship meal followed the service.
Small crosses made from materials of the 1960s church building’s windows were distributed to the approximately 250 attendees as keepsakes. Nance added that a 100-year-old curio cabinet that had been donated to the church was stocked with old church records and other artifacts and was on display for attendees to view. A DVD presentation of church photographs from the past also was shown during the service.
According to anniversary committee chairperson Marty Battle, a quilt made by some of the church’s ladies featuring a picture of the original church building and other historical items was hung in the fellowship hall.
Pastor Jerry Hood said the anniversary “was a step into revival (and) we had a lot of good results from revival as well.”
Looking to the future of Mount Enon, Hood noted that the 11 acres of land the church has purchased surrounding its current property will give them room to grow.
