FBC Bridgeport celebrates 100th anniversary with yearlong focus

On Aug. 15, First Baptist Church, Bridgeport, in Tennessee River Association officially celebrated its 100th anniversary.

However, the church began early in the year to observe its anniversary, having a special emphasis during each month. July services, for example, were highlighted by a patriotic service and cookout, four-part harmony singing, contemporary music and a concert of talent within the church.

The August service marked the anniversary with a sermon by Rick Lance, executive director of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions, and a presentation by the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission. Lunch was served after the morning service.

But that will not be the end of the celebrating, said Jim Bernard, pastor

of First, Bridgeport. The centennial committee plans to continue events throughout the year.

Bernard said the church’s history indicates the Sunday School was partially organized Jan. 17, 1904. The next week, the organization was completed. Sometime after that, the church became known as First Baptist.

Although there are indications that the church may have petitioned to become part of the association as early as 1893, the cornerstone of the building uses 1904 as the date of inception.

The church began with 12 members and has grown to about 388, Bernard continued.

The first church structure was built in 1915, he said. Then, in 1966, property was acquired for the current structure. Construction of that building was complete in 1973.(TAB)
