Gardendale man indicted on child sex charges

Joel Kent Hodges, a former worship leader at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, Gardendale, has been indicted on charges of soliciting a child under 16 for sex and traveling to meet the child, al.com reported.

Hodges, who was arrested Dec. 28, 2012, was released three days later. The Jefferson County grand jury did not indict him until August 2013 and did not file the indictments in the state’s online court system until mid-November, according to al.com.

At press time, al.com reported that Hodges had not been scheduled for any appearances in circuit court, according to records.

Mt. Vernon United Methodist also formerly employed Terry Greer as pastor, who is charged with murder and attempted murder in the shooting of his wife and wounding his daughter, al.com reported, noting that neither man had worked more than a year at the church. (TAB)
