Several community leaders in Georgiana are making a concerted effort to spread God’s Word among those who need to hear it most.
It’s about doing more together than they can do alone, said Allen Stephenson, pastor of First Baptist Church; Randy Harvill, pastor of Brushey Creek Baptist Church; and Reginald Williams, pastor of Bible Baptist Church, all of Georgiana.
“The real purpose of our meeting is … three churches that would … jointly reach out in the community to meet needs,” Stephenson said. “If there’s some area of their lives that need prayer or if there’s some way we can assist them, we want to do that. We just want to be God’s hands and feet.”
The idea began with the late Keith Lowe, member and deacon at First, Georgiana.
“He had a passion to bring churches together,” Stephenson said. “We started talking with him and … we began to reach out and think of ways that we could bring people together.”
Physically visiting members of the community and knocking on doors has been especially effective for Brushey Creek Baptist. Its members have worked alongside First, Georgiana, members to get a similar program off the ground.
Bible Baptist has done the same, though the congregation faces a number of unique challenges of its own.
“Bible Baptist Church has done a good job of knocking on doors, but there are just not enough of them to have a tremendous impact,” Stephenson said. “So several other pastors and I have expressed an interest in trying to help Reggie get his church built (and become part of the association).”
“I’m appreciative of (Stephenson and Harvill) for taking us under their wing,” Williams said. “The Bible says ‘go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.’ If 12 disciples turned the world upside down, what do you think we can do in this county?”
