Golloher receives missionary appointment

Sonya Golloher, a native of Florala, was recently appointed by the North American Mission Board (NAMB) to serve as a missionary in Savannah, Ga. She is working as the weekday director for the Savannah Baptist Center.

Golloher is a graduate of Mobile College (now University of Mobile) with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and Southwestern Seminary with master’s degrees in Christian education and divinity.

As a worker with Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) during summer camps from 1989 to 1992 at Shocco Springs Conference Center, Golloher said the campus stirred her interest in missions work. After graduating from Mobile in ’92, Golloher served in Rochester, N.Y., as an activity director for an apartment ministry as a US/C-2 missionary through NAMB.

Golloher, 30, said God called her to seminary to get her master’s degree in Christian education. Little did she know He had even more plans for her in Texas- to get another master’s degree in divinity. While in seminary from 1994-1999, Golloher spent summers working in Florida at the WMU camp. She also worked at a LifeWay Christian Store while in seminary.

After finishing seminary in 1999, Golloher worked in Florida at a camp and had a prospective job with an association when she felt God calling her to missions.

As weekday director, she recruits and trains volunteers to work with about 100-150 people from all age groups. She helps plan after school activities, Bible studies, games and discipleship groups. The center serves about 300 people with its programs.

Golloher’s appointment came in October 1999, but she has officially been on the mission field since February.

She was commissioned May 5 in West Virginia.

Golloher said she has been enjoying her post.

“The people here are just wonderful,” she said.
