Gospel singing convention set for Shocco

The Alabama State Gospel Singing Convention will hold its 75th annual meeting Nov. 11-13 at Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center in Talladega.

The singing convention, which began in Birmingham in 1931, brings together singers from all denominations who sight-read gospel music the day of the convention. They perform as a group with a different director leading each song.

“We love to sing gospel music and we love the Lord,” said Phillip Thornell, president of the state gospel singing convention.

Activities will take place Nov. 11 at 6 p.m., Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. and Nov. 13 at 9 a.m. Singers from at least 13 states are expected to attend.

During this year’s convention, 6 new songbooks will be presented, awards will handed out and a youth choir made up of teenagers from several different states will sing.

The convention is open to the public.
