ABUJA, Nigeria — Eighty-six Christians have been slaughtered in a matter of weeks in one Nigerian state, and a prominent attorney implored the country’s president to declare a military state of emergency there.
Nigeria has led the world in the number of Christians killed for their faith. It is No. 7 on Open Doors’ 2025 World Watch List of the 50 places most difficult to be a Christian. However, the onslaught against Christians in Nigeria has intensified markedly in the past couple of months, leaving hundreds dead.

In less than two weeks, Muslim Fulani herdsmen murdered 86 individuals in Christian areas of Nigeria’s Benue state. Half were slain on June 1, sources told Christian Daily International-Morning Star News. The villages that the herdsmen raided include Tse Antswam, Edikwu-Ankpali and Opaha, as well as Naka town.
The attacks happened between May 24 and June 1, sources said.
“Sebastine Hon, senior advocate of Nigeria, a prestigious designation conferred upon recommendation of the Nigerian Bar Association, wrote to (Nigerian) President Bola Tinubu on [June 2] demanding immediate measures to halt the growing bloodshed,” reports the news outlet.
“‘It is most imperative that a state of military emergency be declared by Mr. President’” in Benue state, the news article continues, quoting Hon’s letter.
