Jerry Henry’s ministry journey began when he returned from Army service in Vietnam. “When I came back my wife had answers to things I didn’t have. … She inspired me to start studying God’s Word and I couldn’t get enough.”
All these years later, Henry has announced his retirement as pastor of First Baptist Church, Fairhope, where he has served for almost 15 years. He will retire May 31.
After experiencing that initial desire for the Word, Henry felt God leading him to Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, where he earned master’s and doctor of philosophy degrees. He had earned a bachelor’s degree from Auburn University prior to serving in the Army.
Henry also has served as pastor of Thomaston Baptist Church and Elkdale Baptist Church, Selma. Altogether he has served as a pastor for more than 30 years. He also served as chairman of the religion department at Judson College in Marion for five years.
Looking back on his years in ministry, Henry would advise young pastors to dig into the church they are called to. “You learn the people better the longer you stay with them. … Learn to love them and be with them when they need you. Then preach the Word.”
He and his wife, Susan, plan to remain in Fairhope and will serve “wherever God leads.” They have three children and seven grandchildren.
