Inquiry set after teacher burns New Testament

JERUSALEM — Israel's Ministry of Education has launched an inquiry into the case of an Israeli schoolteacher who presided over the public burning of a New Testament in front of a class of students at a state religious school in the Jerusalem suburb of Beit Shemesh.

Education Minister Limor Livnat denounced the incident, but said an inquiry would be launched before any disciplinary action is taken against the teacher and the school principal.

The teacher at the Orot Religious School reportedly held the outdoor book burning in early December after a student at the school received a copy of the New Testament from a Christian missionary.
