Jeff Iorg was officially installed as the new president of the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee tonight (Sept. 16).
“God’s call is a subjective experience. … A fair question is, ‘Why would we be willing to respond positively … to take on such a challenging organizational role?’
“Because of gratitude to and for Southern Baptists. … (My wife Ann and I) are products of Southern Baptists as their best,” he said.
“And because Southern Baptists at their best are a force for good.”
Iorg said he plans to work to help cut down the drama among Southern Baptist leaders and minimize the distractions keeping Baptists from focusing on their missions and ministry efforts.
“We can set the pace on working collectively together. … We can provide the leadership for this generation and … set the stage for the next generation.”
Philip Robertson, chair of the SBC EC trustees, noted following Iorg’s roughly 25-minute message:
“Dr. Iorg has many strengths, but I believe you have heard tonight perhaps one of his stronger strengths — and perhaps one of the most important — that is passionate mission focus. I think that is part of why God has him here.”
The Baptist Paper, Baptist Press and other media outlets will have full coverage from tonight’s installation service posted within a few hours. To watch the full installation service and hear Iorg’s full message, click here.
