Judson ‘extraordinarily’ prepares women

On Tuesdays at 11 a.m., life stops at Judson College in Marion.

“Class stops. Labs stop. Offices close. We gather together [in chapel] and proclaim Christ together,” said Judson President David Potts. “Therein lies the heart of Christian higher education.”

During his report to the Alabama Baptist State Convention Nov. 14, Potts said Judson is a place “that has extraordinarily prepared women” — women like Judi Favor, a Birmingham physician and chair of Judson’s board of trustees.

“Because of Alabama Baptists, I had the opportunity to attend Judson College,” Favor said. And in environments such as Judson’s, students “seek not careers but God’s calling for their lives,” she explained. “Thank you for your support of Christian higher education.”

State Baptists have no purpose more important than providing such education, Favor said, adding that God is using graduates of Baptist colleges to have a huge impact on the world.

Graduates such as Laura Bohler Foreman, whom God took “from Judson to China” after her 2001 graduation.

“She spent four years in cities that had never before had a missionary presence — that’s courage,” Potts said. “Judson graduates are remarkable women accomplishing remarkable things.”

According to the Book of Reports, Judson students began a church-starting partnership this year with the Universidad Valle del Bravo in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, and formalized a faith-based learning initiative on Judson’s campus. The entire freshman class also participated in one of 15 local ministry projects called “Marion Matters.”

Earlier in the year, Judson dedicated the Charles F. Dunkin Athletic Park, which boasts a new softball field and a future soccer field.

“Thank you, Alabama Baptists, for undergirding us and supporting us,” Potts said.

And as is also Judson tradition, convention participants indulged in 100 dozen Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and 83 gallons of coffee doled out by students at Judson’s booth in the exhibit area. (TAB)
