Letters to the editor: Christian Living, Pastors Conference

CHRISTIAN LIVING

I have enjoyed receiving The Alabama Baptist for many years and want to express my appreciation to you and your staff for the excellent work you do in providing us and keeping us up to date with Baptist ministries throughout the state.

Since the horrible event that occurred on Sept. 11, 2001, you are keeping us well informed.

We must wake up to our spiritual responsibility to our Lord and Savior. We have failed to live a life that meets His standards, and unless we pray for His forgiveness and start living up to His standards we will suffer many more attacks.

How wonderful it will be if we as Baptists could unite throughout the convention and pray for our president and all our leadership of the country, and live and pray as He instructs us in 2 Chronicles 7:14: "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and tum from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

PASTORS CONFERENCE

The officers of the Pastors Conference planned one of the best conferences

I have attended in many years. The program of music and preaching was very challenging and inspirational.

However, it disturbs me that it was also used to endorse their candidate for president of our state convention. The remarks made from the pulpit were very inappropriate, and no doubt, greatly influenced the election.

Please don't misunderstand, I think our new president will do a good job. However, since there was a difference of less than 100 votes in the two candidates, it seems likely the results would have been different if the remarks had not been made during the Pastors Conference.

I have personally heard comments by pastors and others from several different areas of our state about how unfair this was to the other candidate.

I hope and pray that our officers for 2003 will not forget the real reason for the Pastors Conference, that is to encourage and inspire us through great music and preaching of God's Word.

In spite of this, the conference was a blessing, and I am thankful for it.
