Lottery Opposition

Lottery Opposition

It is not reasonable for anyone to suggest that past or present advocacy of a state-sponsored lottery is the moral high ground in Alabama. Christians and non-Christians who soundly defeated last year’s lottery proposal did the right thing and owe no apology or penance for doing so. Wise leaders who think a state-sponsored lottery is good for the state should review Alabama history.

Results of prior experiments with state-sanctioned lotteries in  Alabama have demonstrated the corrupting effect of such lotteries on society in general and on state government in particular. Any church who wants to give a portion of its income, no matter how small, to public schools is free to do so. However, such is not required by principles of morality or good citizenship.
