Almost every church in our state has an outdoor church sign. Many have space for a changeable message, whether it’s a lighted letter board or digital. Either type can be quite effective if utilized correctly. Here a few tips to be good stewards of your outdoor sign.
- Communicate to your community the various “doors” through which they may enter your church. “Doors” are the ongoing ministries and attractional events. Give dates and times.
The purpose
- Avoid cute sayings. Keep in mind the purpose of your sign.
- For a lighted message board, be sure all letters and numbers are the same color.
- Be sure the sign is well maintained. Faded paint, peeling lettering, algae in the tracks, burned out lights and poor landscaping send a poor first impression about your church.
- Any information that is permanently on your sign needs to be large enough to be read by a passing vehicle. Your sign professional can advise you on the size of lettering.
- Keep the message up to date. Once an event is over, do not leave it on the message board.
