According to Pastor Charles Crim, there was “a lot of excitement” Sept. 30 as Carlowville Baptist Church, Minter, celebrated 175 years of existence.
Carlowville Baptist’s pastor since 2006, Crim said he saw “lots of hard work” put into the celebration day.
Leading up to the anniversary service, each Sunday in September was focused on the church’s heritage (the start of the church and the construction of its building) and the church’s future (maintaining and building on the spiritual foundation others had laid).
Several significant people attended the anniversary service including Joel Smith, a former pastor; Tom Stacey, director of missions for Selma Baptist Association; Lonette Berg, executive director of the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission; and Harper Shannon, former director of the office of evangelism at the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions.
Shannon shared a sermon pulled from the Sermon on the Mount and related it to three points: an individual’s relationship with the Lord, with each other and with the community. Shannon also had shared at Carlowville’s 150th anniversary and mentioned that he plans to share at the 200th anniversary, Stacey said.
After the service the more than 150 attendees made their way to a luncheon held at the former high school gym.
Stacey said it was “a great day … (and) very well attended.”
“[Carlowville] continues to minister (to the community) and are big supporters of the association. It is involved with so many things [Selma Association] does (such as) missions trips and disaster relief work,” Stacey said.
