More conversion ceremonies planned in India

KERALA, India — More conversion ceremonies have been planned by Dalits in an attempt to escape the harassment and poverty of India’s rigid caste society.

On Nov. 4, more than 20,000 Hindus converted to Buddhism in a mass ceremony led by Dalit leader Ram Raj. Raj recently reported that more ceremonies would take place in January in the cities of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Raj has encouraged relations between Dalits and Christian churches and has kept a close dialogue with Christian leadership since announcing the conversion plan earlier this year.
