With reference to Mr. Watts’ letter concerning Calvinism in the Aug. 20 issue: Without exception, every person who has asked me the “key question” concerning where I’d go were I to die tonight has been from Briarwood Presbyterian Church in Birmingham. And they’re unashamedly Calvinist over there.
That’s curious in light of Mr. Watts’ implication that real adherents to Calvinism would see no reason for evangelism.
The plain truth is that they see “you shall be my witnesses” and “go ye and make disciples” as being commands to be obeyed and, in truth, things we are privileged to do in the Name above all names.
Baptists seem more attuned to being burdened for the lost and telling people about Jesus to ease that burden and because those people out there may not be saved if we don’t tell them.
Frankly the Presbyterians’ motivation seems to be working a lot better than the Baptists’ at least in the places around Birmingham that I’ve been for the past 30 years.
