How startling for our governor to contend movement for tax reform must come from outside government. How vexing are words of a Baptist preacher advocating overt church action to reform state taxes. Thirty references to separation of church and state appear in Wayne Flynt’s recent history of Alabama Baptists. These are must references for anyone interested in putting this controversial issue in perspective.
Local church autonomy is a basic tenet of Southern Baptist polity. Priesthood of individual believers is a closely allied doctrine. I’m disturbed with tactics of any activist who would pressure church members to vote collectively.
