The March 2 issue of The Alabama Baptist had an article printed in it titled “Screaming about Jesus,” which dealt with Christians in the punk-rock scene.
Those gentlemen interviewed in the report had some comments that, in this reader’s opinion, showed serious flaws in their theology. When examining my belief system, I always like to ask the question, how would Jesus respond?
Lord knows I have flaws that need correcting and God is still working on me, but I fail to see how screaming, mostly incoherently, to a rhythm can honor God. Other than the rocks crying out if we refuse to speak of Christ the Lord and King and shouting from the rooftops those things that were previously spoken secretly, there is nothing scriptural involved with screaming about Jesus.
Jesus was not a rebel in His time. He followed Mosaic law and traditions and did not call attention to Himself by wearing avant-garde styles in clothing and hair, nor did He partake in tattooing and body piercing. These practices were performed by the heathen and idol worshipers of the day.
Here are what I believe to be problems with the “scene kids:”
• “They let me be myself.” This is wrong. We come to Jesus as we are, but we do not stay that way. We must change. We must repent.
• “We’ll throw him (Satan) into the abyss and lock hell shut.” This is wrong. Only Jesus has the keys of heaven and hell, and even the archangel Michael would not rebuke, challenge or slander Satan.
• “They are strong-willed, stubborn kids just like me. If, say, my parents hated my music, hated the way I live … that’s going to roll off my back.” This is wrong. Jesus said, “Honor your father and mother.”
• “I look like a hardcore kid and I talk like a hardcore kid, but if I can get these kids to see that I’m a good person …” This is wrong. Jesus said only his heavenly Father is good. The hardcore walk and talk will result in others walking and talking hardcore. It will not bring any to salvation. Anyone can say they have found Christ, but if they truly have, the proof will be in the fruit of the Spirit not in screaming about Jesus.
