Randolph’s Union Springs celebrates centennial

Union Springs Baptist Church, Randolph, celebrated its centennial May 19 with a 10 a.m. worship service.

The Chilton Baptist Association church had many people from years past visit for the service, including retired pastors, said Pastor Steve Johnson.

A proclamation from Bobby Martin, Chilton County probate judge, was read, and Larry Felkins, director of missions for Chilton Association, delivered a proclamation to the church as well.

Mavis Gates, representative from the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission, was on hand to present Union Springs Baptist with a plaque commemorating its 100 years of ministry.

John Killian, pastor of Maytown Baptist Church and president of the Alabama Baptist State Convention, was the keynote speaker and delivered a challenge for the future.

Special music was featured during the service by the church choir. A history of the church read on the church’s 75th anniversary had been updated for the centennial and was read by church member Tommie Mitchell. In addition, Myrtle Hayes, the church’s oldest living member, was honored and presented with a plaque. According to Johnson, about 250 people attended the anniversary service.

Johnson said Union Springs Baptist has a twofold mission: to worship the Lord and see people saved. “Missions is of big importance to us,” he said, noting the church is keeping “missions on the forefront.”
