I found your report about the reactions of religious leaders to President Bush’s state of the Union speech both informative and demonstrative about the divide that faces the church on various issues facing our country.
I do not believe that our president wants to go to war with anyone, but it is clear that he has decided that war is necessary without radical changes in the leadership and policies of the Iraqi government. President Bush’s decisions appear to be based upon the facts that Saddam Hussein is a ruthless and oppressive dictator who has murdered many of his own countrymen and who supports the Islamic terrorist movement that seeks to destroy our nation. Hussein is clearly more dangerous than the Serbian leader Milosevic, who our country took action to remove from power in order to protect a Muslim minority. The question I have for those opposing the president’s action are : Did those critics support President Clinton’s intervention in Serbia, and do they believe that Hussein would not support a future terrorist attack on our country that we experienced on 9/11?
I, for one, will take the position that we do have a responsibility to stand up against brutal leaders like Hussein.
