SBC name change

SBC name change

You hit the nail solidly on the head with your recent article concerning the proposed name change for Southern Baptists (see “Time for a Name Change?,” Nov. 10 issue). I am tired of folks saying they are ashamed of our name.

I’m tired of those who say our name is associated with prejudice. If one is tired of being called a Southern Baptist, he has other options available other than trying to change our name.

Our name is synonymous with loving, giving and caring for others. Our name reflects our history of maintaining a consistent belief in the Bible as the inspired word of God. Our name is associated with missionaries around the world. Our name is associated with the fight against injustices. Our name is associated with our love for all people, regardless of race, sex or national origin. Our name is respected throughout the world. The president of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) should not be trying to get the name changed by appointing a committee to rubber-stamp his preconceived desire for such.

The SBC has spoken decisively to this issue on several different occasions, but some folks will not let it die. It’s like they want their way in spite of the voice of the people down through the years. It seems to me to be a waste of time and energy for the appointment of another committee to study a subject we have already addressed.
