What do a surfing theme, hundreds of pre-teens, the state of Alabama and the month of February have in common? Easy — it’s Pre-Teen Extreme 2016 (PTX2016) held Feb. 26–27 at Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center’s Adventure Camp facilities in Talladega.
A unique opportunity for students in grades 4–6 to gather and “nose dive into God’s Word,” PTX2016 will combine its theme of “Hang Ten” with lessons on how to be bold in your faith and how to share Christ with friends without fear.
The weekend will host guest speaker Kenneth Bruce, pastor of disciple making and students for Westwood Baptist Church, Alabaster.
Pre-teens will be able to participate in adventure games, team building activities like the zip line, high and low ropes and a giant swing, as well worship at the third annual event. PTX leadership and Shocco Springs staff will supervise activities.
‘Most important years’
Ric Callahan, pastor of families at Westwood Baptist, helped organize and start the first PTX and is the retreat’s director (see Ministry Tips, this issue, for tips on pre-teen ministry in your church).
Grades 4–6 “are some of the most important years spiritually and relationally for children. … We think a weekend away from home is the perfect opportunity for pre-teens to really dig into their faith and learn what it means to be a disciple of Jesus,” Callahan said.
