Shocked by letter

I was shocked by the spirit of the letter to the editor about mileage reimbursements to ministers. First of all, most churches do not allow 1,500 miles per month if they use an accountable reimbursement plan. Most, such as mine, provide less than $1,000 a year per minister. Second, it seems to just be a rehash of the old mentality to “keep them poor and humble.”

Most business people who are members of our churches receive much higher pay and many more benefits than the majority of ministers. Most do not have anywhere near the formal education, training and experience of the ministers they want to keep needy. Sure we need to use God’s money wisely, but when a church calls a minister, they are responsible to meet his financial needs. If they can’t, perhaps they should not have paid ministers.
