SINGLES IN THE CHURCH

SINGLES IN THE CHURCH

I was very pleased to see your comments on singles and the Baptist church. I was divorced 12 years ago and fell under the category where being single was “thrust” upon me by my husband’s addiction to pornography. I had married for life and, unfortunately, it just did not turn out that way.

I became very angry and bitter and thought church was just for people who were part of families, and “yes” I also blamed God for being along. Last year, through a series of personal tragedies, a close friend and Baptist once again invited me to attend her church. My parents had both been Baptists and were married to each other for almost 60 years.

I decided that I needed a “family,” and so I accepted her offer. I feel blessed now that I made the decision. Despite that I was almost 50 years old, I accepted Christ as my personal Savior, was baptized, and now am a regular in a Sunday School class made up of married and single women where I feel accepted for who I am. Had it not been for the warm reception offered to me by everyone — singles and married alike — I probably would have gone once and never returned.

Again, thanks for the positive comments about singles. I think its important to remember how difficult it is for someone to step into a situation where they are “different.”
