Super Bowl Sunday offers opportunity to reach community

Huffman Baptist, Shades Mountain Baptist and First Baptist, Birmingham, all in Birmingham Association, joined the thousands who watched Super Bowl XXXV, Jan. 28.

Instead of competing with one of the most watched sporting events of the year, the churches, along with other churches across the state, made it an outreach opportunity as the Baltimore Ravens defeated the New York Giants 34–7. Offering free hot dogs, popcorn, chips and sodas, the churches attracted fans from the community.

Shades Mountain, holding its fourth annual Super Bowl Bash, had more than 600 participants.

Along with a big screen to watch the game, fans also had fun with door prizes and other games.

Steve Shaw, head referee for one of the top officiating crews in the Southeastern Conference, was the half-time speaker.

Huffman Baptist had Jeremiah Castille, former University of Alabama football standout and Denver Bronco, on hand for the event. Huffman also gave away prizes during the commercials.

First, Birmingham, had close to 150 people. The church’s youth led a service of music and drama during half-time and youth minister Stuart Davidson had a devotion. (TAB)
