Ten Commandments

Ten Commandments

I would like to respectfully disagree with Rudy Tidwell’s letter concerning the Ten Commandments.

He says he has been preaching about the Ten Commandments for 45 years and has asked people to recite them in order and the response has been “underwhelming.”

He thinks folks should be able to recite them and tell where they are found in the Bible.

There are people who seldom, if ever, go to church or read the Bible. Yet, these folks know how to treat their neighbor with respect, dignity and love and would never knowingly tell a lie about that neighbor. On the other hand, there are people who make a show of their religion and can regurgitate the Ten Commandments in order and cite chapter and verse and seem unable to say anything good about anyone who disagrees with them.

A prime example of this “bearing false witness” involves the display of the Ten Commandments.

How many “religious” people have ascribed false motives to those of us who don’t want the Ten Commandments used as political pawns? How many state and federal officials have been falsely accused of being “anti-God?” Also, we could look at the turmoil in the Southern Baptist Convention.

It would seem that these folks would know better, but much of the trouble is being caused by “false witness.”
