‘The Tide’ radio ministry looks for ways to share gospel in Nigeria

KAWURI, Nigeria (The Tide) — Two villages in northeastern Nigeria were attacked by suspected Islamist militants, leaving 74 dead.

Militants attacked Kawuri village in Borno state at a busy market, setting off explosives and setting houses ablaze. The attacks were blamed on Boko Haram, a radical Islam group.

Don Shenk, director of The Tide, a 68-year-old global gospel ministry that produces radio programs in several heart languages throughout the world, looks to find new ways to serve in Nigeria and to reach the entire region with its radio program that delivers the message of the love of Christ.

“This recent attack in Nigeria is all the more reason it’s so crucial for The Tide to continue its work there,” Shenk said. “Our radio ministry in Nigeria has been thriving for years and we believe the gospel seeds planted in Nigeria have the potential to impact all of northern Africa. It is terrible to see these attacks occur on innocent victims and we pray that the violence will stop.

“Millions of Nigerians need to hear God’s truth proclaimed in their own language and we urge the people of Nigeria to keep their minds and hearts open and to know that God is still with them.”

The Tide offers radio broadcasts in 19 languages throughout the world.  Its Vision 2015 initiative builds on the momentum of more than six decades of radio ministry with the goal of adding several new languages to the effort over the next two years. With almost a quarter of the world’s population living within the current range of The Tide radio programming, and nearly 7,000 languages spoken in the world today, the opportunities are tremendous. Several new languages that The Tide is looking to include are those spoken by people in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Nigeria. Currently, The Tide serves people speaking in eight of the major languages spoken in Nigeria.

Donors from across the United States have enabled The Tide’s radio programs to thrive and expand into more countries through its “Sponsor a Radio” program that helps further projects like The Tide’s Radios for India and Radios for Nigeria.
