August 18 marked the celebration of Toxey Baptist Church’s centennial with a service that began at 10 a.m.
Pastor Ervin Mooney provided the welcome and John Reid, representative from the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission, presented a plaque to the Choctaw Baptist Association church.
The speaker that morning was Franklin McLelland, director of missions for Choctaw Association.
Several former pastors were recognized during the service, including Roger Carlisle, Charles Gordon, John Clark, Randy Byrd and Frank Tribble.
After the service, everyone enjoyed lunch and an afternoon singing by The Revelators.
There were at least 200 people in attendance, according to Shirley Doggette, who served on the anniversary planning committee with Linda Skinner, Kristy Chapman and Leta Koen.
Doggette noted that a booklet of the church’s history was given to everyone as a keepsake. She added that one of the most memorable parts of the day was recognizing the former pastors and their wives who were in attendance. “They each had a little thing to say and I think everyone enjoyed that,” she noted. Mooney agreed, adding it was a “wonderful experience” to meet with them.
Looking to the future of Toxey Baptist, Mooney said the vision is to become more involved in missions work — expanding the church’s current missions work in Guatemala, as well as expanding the church’s ministries within the local community.
