Tuscaloosa ministry needs help with helping others

The Wings of Grace Disaster Relief Center, a ministry of Forest Lake Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa Association, is in immediate need of men’s clothing (all sizes), women’s clothing (large and plus-size) and cold-weather coverings such as blankets and coats.

Outside of these and other material donations, however, the ministry is in desperate need of volunteers, said Wings of Grace Director Terri Hibbard.

“The Lord is bringing us more and more provision and more and people who need help, but we need help helping them,” Hibbard said, noting that due to health reasons and other personal circumstances, several of the ministry’s volunteers have had to quit.

While assistance from individuals, businesses, churches and other non-profits across the country ensure that no material need is left unmet, organizing and distributing the center’s inventory, she noted, is a huge job.

“Things are constantly on the shelf, off the shelf,” she said, “and we don’t turn anybody away. If someone is over-qualified for the food we purchase from the community’s food bank, they get something else.”

Begun the day after a violent EF4 tornado hit Tuscaloosa on April 27, 2011, Wings of Grace has been going strong ever since, seeking to feed, clothe and otherwise serve those left hurting and homeless in the wake of life’s storms.
