Two Alabama churches received minor to moderate damage as a result of high winds Feb. 13 that damaged several businesses and left many across the state without power.
A dozen trees were uprooted at Union Baptist Church, Lipscomb, in the Bessemer Association, and in the adjoining yard of the church’s pastor, David Mahaffey.
Estimating some 40-50 trees were uprooted in a quarter-mile area surrounding the church, Mahaffey said the only damage to the church and his home were a few shingles that were blown from the roofs.”
“We were very fortunate,” Mahaffey said, adding that his dinning room would have been hit if one of the trees had fallen in a different direction.
The news was not as good for a house beside Mahaffey. He said one of the house’s bedrooms and foyers were damaged when a tree fell.
Information concerning damage to the New Home Baptist Church in the Mount Hebron community near Boaz was sketchy at press time. Initially it was reported that the church was blown into the road, but Emergency Management Agency official David Martin said that information was incorrect and the building sustained damage to the fellowship hall after the roof was destroyed.
Several injuries but no deaths were reported as a result of weather activity in Alabama. At least 12 people were killed in Tifton and Mitchell counties located in southwest Georgia.
