After serving for 40 years in some capacity at Vineland Park Baptist Church, Hueytown, James “Jim” Alton Gunn retired from his pastoral role at the Bessemer Baptist Association church in September.
Gunn earned his bachelor’s degree from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University) and worked for several years as an engineer at BellSouth and AT&T.
He was a founding member of Reformed Baptist Church, Franklin, Tennessee (now Grace Church at Franklin), before beginning to serve as pastor’s assistant and teacher at Vineland Park Baptist in 1975. The church ordained him to gospel ministry in 2000 and he served as pastor/elder from that time until his retirement.
Gunn served alongside two to four other elders (or co-pastors) during his time in leadership. He also served as chairman of the board of Sav-A-Life Bessemer.
He and his wife, Cora, who have moved to Andalusia in retirement, have one son, two grandchildren and one great–grandchild.
