Wall Highway marks 50th anniversary

In a celebration service that highlighted its former ministry leaders but encouraged participants to “look forward to the future,” Wall Highway Baptist Church, Madison, marked its 50th anniversary Sept. 13.

Beginning with a welcome by Pastor Greg Lee and a video showing the church’s history, the morning service featured a time of recognition of present and former pastors, ministers and those affiliated with Wall Highway Baptist who were called into ministry. Nancy Beasley, Alabama Baptist Historical Commission representative, presented a plaque to the church.

Former pastor Ray Walker spoke about previous ministry leaders and encouraged members to lift up and love their pastor. Charles Davis, also a former pastor, current pastor emeritus and senior adult minister, wrote a letter about the early years of the church and its growth, which was read by Lee.

Former music minister Kevin Thomas led congregational singing and performed solos, selecting each song specifically to represent the church’s 50 years.

The key speaker was former longtime pastor Sonny Kirk, who spoke on Hebrews 12 and emphasized running the race with endurance and keeping one’s eyes on Jesus.

Lee closed out the service with the charge for participants to “surrender fully to Jesus,” “submit to the leading of the Spirit” and “give your life away for God’s kingdom.”

Anniversary committee chairman Steve Chitwood noted that Wall Highway has overcome the collapse of the roof of its Christian Life Center (see July 29, 2010 issue) to reach this 50-year mark, a show of God’s provision over its ministry.

Each family that participated in the service received a gift bag with several items bearing the anniversary logo. A fellowship lunch concluded the celebration.
