Want to know God?

Want to know God?

Rockford Baptist Church

There is a difference between knowing God and knowing about God. One will lead from God; the other will lead to God.

Ted Turner, the great mogul of media, knows about God. His knowledge is vast enough that he knows the difference between heaven and hell. In 1994, he was quoted as saying, “Heaven is perfect. Who wants to go to a place that’s perfect? Boring, boring. [In hell], we’ll have a chance to make things better because hell is supposed to be a mess.” I would say he knows about God but does he know God?

At the other end of the spectrum is a woman who gave her life serving God. Through her acts of care and compassion, she demonstrated a keen desire to know God. Mother Teresa in “A Gift for God” wrote, “We all long for heaven where God is, but we have it in our power to be in heaven with Him right now — to be happy with Him at this very moment.

But being happy with Him now means: loving as He loves, helping as He helps, giving as He gives, serving as He serves, rescuing as He rescues, being with Him for all the 24 hours, touching Him in His distressing disguise.”

Mother Teresa is right; we do “have in our power … to be happy with Him.” You will find true happiness in knowing God, not just knowing about God. Knowing God means trusting Him with all of you and living in a relationship with Him. I know about Ted Turner, but I do not know him; I knew about Mother Teresa, but I did not know her. But God I know — I know Him because each day, I walk with Him and talk with Him and He directs my path along the way toward my eternal home.

I know Him because I trusted Him to forgive me of my sin at the age of 9. I know Him because He has helped me and encouraged me and strengthened me during these 37 years of living.

I know Him because He loves me and calls me His.

Will you come to Him today? He wants you to know Him in a personal relationship. That is why God sent His Son.
