For years, when people have asked me to describe how I identified myself as a Southern Baptist, I have been quick to identify myself as an Alabama Baptist. I am proud to claim that identity because I believe our Alabama Baptist family is the finest expression of Baptist life to be found anywhere. We are a unique and unified state convention.
Our Alabama Baptist paper is one of the best resources available that enables us as Alabama Baptists to embrace and celebrate the special identity we share. For most of my adult life it has been my primary means of discovering what is happening in Baptist life internationally, nationally, on a state level and among our local churches. The Alabama Baptist provides the kind of information we need to be effective and informed believers.
I appreciate how various elements of the paper work together to challenge our thinking and strengthen our faith. Dr. Terry’s editorials offer provocative insights and challenge us to consider how our faith directs our thinking about theological, cultural and social issues that impact our lives. The news articles provide information we need to be informed and thoughtful Baptist believers. Special features within the paper tell us about what is taking place in and among Alabama Baptist churches and associations.
It is a means to keep us connected with one another. I particularly enjoy reading Rashional Thoughts, where I have discovered a personal and often whimsical perspective on life and faith through the eyes of a thoughtful observer.
When you put all these dimensions and more together, you have a Baptist paper that is unmatched and a great source for understanding what it means to be a strong Baptist disciple in today’s world.
I am glad that the members of our church have the opportunity to read The Alabama Baptist every week. I encourage Alabama Baptist churches everywhere to offer this invaluable resource to their members as well.
