Widow in Uganda flees after receiving threats

A widow in central Uganda fled her home after receiving threats from local Muslim leaders when she arranged for a pastor to bury the body of her husband, sources said.

Sharifa Kasozi Nakamate has been a Christian since October 2018. On July 11, Islamist leaders gave her one day to recant her Christian faith or leave her homestead, she said. Among those who gave Nakamate the ultimatum was her son. Nakamate sought refuge at church and has since relocated to another area.

Uganda’s constitution and other laws provide for religious freedom, including the right to share one’s faith and convert from one faith to another. Islam is a minority religion in the country, with most Ugandans professing Christianity. (MS)
