Worship music

Thank you for the series of articles on worship ministry recently. All of them have been helpful, well written and informative. I especially appreciate Bob Terry’s editorial in the Feb. 14 edition.

The most helpful statement, I think, was, “Whatever music is used should speak to the needs of the entire congregation. … [M]embers should be mature enough to understand that one’s preference is not the only legitimate worship style.” It is the spiritually mature congregation that understands the need for music style to be generationally relevant. The Psalms encourages us to “sing a new song.”

Music is not inherently Christian or secular. Music is merely a vehicle to convey biblical truth. Other criteria for worship song selection would involve theological accuracy, relevancy to the spiritual needs of the congregation and “singability.” Some favorite older songs and some popular newer songs probably do not meet these criteria, and the worship leader has the responsibility for making this determination.
