‘Few are many,’ Martinez agrees

Diego Martinez’s church in Barcelona, Barceloneta Baptist Church, averages an attendance of about 130 and sponsors three mission points around the city.

Working with volunteer teams is more difficult in large churches in the larger cities, Martinez said. The members live farther away and have busier lives. But when Alabama Baptists wanted to do an evangelistic campaign, he welcomed the team.

The three-member team worked at the church and at the Sant Andrev De La Barca mission point, which is in a town of about 20,000 people.

About 80 people attended the mission point event, which is “a good number,” he said.

“The Alabamians may have been a little surprised because in the (United) States they think of a campaign as being thousands of people,” Martinez said. “But the number that came was good, and many contacts were made because of the Alabama team.”

Not only did the team make new contacts, they also helped deepen existing relationships, he said. The team encouraged a greater number of church members to participate in the evangelistic campaign.

“The church members decided that if these people came all the way from Alabama to be involved, then they were going to be involved also,” Martinez explained.

Other efforts that had a positive impact included distributing the “Jesus” film, sharing testimonies and eating in the homes.

“It is incredible the energy the volunteers bring,” Martinez said. “That really encourages tremendously.”
