Concern for SBC

I find the comments of John Piper disturbing at the recent Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) annual convention (see “Paranoia or Vigilance?,” Aug. 4 issue). Piper’s warning to the SBC to guard against “unintentional drift” into heresy and to be vigilant to ensure that “content matters more than motive” is almost laughable, considering 70 percent or more of SBC members, according to LifeWay Research, find his doctrine (Calvinism) in error, if not heretical. Yet most of the panel he was on adhered to his doctrine. The divide in the convention is only going to grow as long as the SBC keeps bringing these men in to speak whose doctrine is well in the minority. I see no compromise as the nature and character of God is so differently interpreted from these men.

My prayer is for unity in the convention, but I do not see how that can happen when there are two different gospels being preached! That might be why we see the decline in SBC membership!
