Have you ever done something so totally stupid that, afterward, you just stood still and marveled at your own brainlessness?
Never has my lack of wisdom been so obvious as the day I received delivery of a large, heavy box. It contained the lumber and hardware for a chest of drawers for our basement. We had a playroom down there for our grandkids, and the drawers would serve as storage for toys and games.

I dragged the box to the top of the basement stairs, then pondered how best to get it down to the playroom. There was no one home to help me, and of course I was too impatient to wait for help. After several moments of contemplation in my weak mind, I decided to tip the long, rectangular box onto its side, get in front of it and guide it slowly down the steps.
However, the instant I pushed the huge, hefty container to its side, before I could hop in front of it, it took off down the carpeted stairs like a heat-seeking missile. The box, picking up momentum as it sped down the slope, smashed into a door leading into the garage so hard, it blew the doorknob right out of the door, and left a crack spanning the entire width of the middle panel.
I stood at the top of the stairs, incredulous at the scene I had just witnessed. If I had video of this, it would certainly win the grand prize on “America’s Funniest Home Videos.”
‘Ready source’
Instead, I was left only to fathom my lack of wisdom, and to try and figure out how to explain it to my wife when she got home.
Clearly, I need wisdom. We all do. Not just in our daily decisions, but in the way we decide to approach our lives. Thankfully, there is a ready source. The Bible tells us, “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding” (Prov. 2:6).
We’re all going to be tempted to make silly decisions, wrong decisions, during our journey through life. Studying God’s word will help you navigate the thought process.
I have assembled the chest of drawers and replaced the door. And I’m studying a lot of Bible verses about wisdom. Maybe a few of them will sink in.
