George William Miller, a retired Alabama Baptist pastor, died Feb. 12. He was 84.
A Birmingham native, Miller was ordained in 1949. He graduated from Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham with a bachelor’s degree in religion and English; Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., with a bachelor’s degree in divinity and a master’s degree in theology; and Luther Rice Seminary & University in Lithonia, Ga., with a doctorate in theology.
Through a ministry that spanned 62 years, Miller served as pastor of churches in Kentucky, Florida and Alabama.
His Alabama pastorates were Cave Springs Baptist Church, Attalla; West End Baptist Church, Gadsden; Hopewell Baptist Church, Pinson; County Line Baptist Church, Trafford; Village Springs Baptist Church, Remlap; and First Baptist Church, Remlap.
He also served as interim director of missions for Friendship Baptist Association and interim pastor for Pleasant Mount Baptist Church, Remlap.
He instituted chaplaincy programs and was director of pastoral care at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah, Ky., and Baptist Hospital of Miami.
Among Miller’s leadership roles, he served as president of the Southern Baptist Association of Hospital Chaplains and the Baptist Association of South Florida Chaplains.
Miller served as a petty officer third class in the U.S. Navy during World War II and received the bronze battle star, World War II Victory Medal, China Service Medal and Ribbon and Combat Action Ribbon.
At the time of his death, he was a member of Eastside Baptist Church, Birmingham, where he taught the Joy Sunday School Class for adults.
Miller is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sarah; two children; and four grandchildren. (TAB)
